Effectiveness of Beclomethasone in Treating Asthma in Children and Adolescents

22 June 06:36

Objective of the Review: To describe nebulizers as an effective alternative to metered-dose aerosol inhalers as a delivery device for corticosteroids (CS) both in young children and in patients in other age groups.

Key Points: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the basis for a safe anti-inflammatory treatment of asthma in children and teenagers in all age groups. ICS have been shown to be effective in combination with bronchodilators. Nebulized beclomethasone (beclomethasone dipropionate — BDP) has been used in asthma treatment for more than 35 years. Meta-analyses have shown that BDP, like other ICS, doesn't affect the patient's growth, adrenal function, hypothalamic-pituitary axis or bone metabolism. Regular long-term use of small doses of ICS in patients with moderate-to-severe or severe asthma effectively controls its symptoms, reduces its severity, prevents recurrences, and improves pulmonary functioning. Short-term ICS treatment can be used to treat asthma exacerbations in children aged six or older.

Conclusion: ICS are still used as the key element of treatment schemes for persistent asthma.
