Comorbidity of Neurotic-Spectrum Disorders and Medical Conditions in Military Men

30 march 2015

Study Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of neurotic-spectrum disorders co-existing with medical (non-mental) heath disorders in military men and to investigate the types of this comorbidity.

Study Design: This was an open-label, comparative study.

Materials and Methods: We examined the health status of 326 military men serving under contract. Of them, 91 had neurotic-spectrum disorders, and 235 did not have any mental diseases (control group).

Study Results: In 67% of the military men who had neurotic-spectrum disorders, these conditions were accompanied by medical disorders. The latter were seen in men as frequently as in women (65.1% vs. 68.7%). In 59.3% of cases, the study subjects had two or more medical conditions. The most common were gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disorders, which included different combinations of dysplasia and immune and metabolic abnormalities. The authors identified certain groups of medical conditions co-existing with neurotic-spectrum disorders.

Conclusion: Patients with hypochondria and somatoform disorders were at highest risk for concomitant medical conditions. In military men, concomitant medical conditions worsened the clinical manifestations of neurotic-spectrum disorders and made the diagnosis of mental disturbances more difficult. Specialized standards of medical care for people with comorbid neurotic-spectrum and medical disorders should be developed.
